Have you even considered a dental implant or have you been recommended on by your dentist, but do not know enough implants and the procedure to make a decision right for you? If so this may be an intestine read for you!
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are titanium post that replace missing roots of teeth. Dental implants are placed when teeth are missing, to support a denture, or partial or support a bridge. These implants have to be carefully positioned into the jawbone by the dentist. Many things come into factor before deciding if you are a candidate for a dental implant.
When considering dental implants the dentist has to make sure you have adequate bone levels, healthy gums, and a overall healthy oral cavity. If there is not enough supporting bone the the implant will not hold into place causing the implant to fail. Its ideal to have your oral cavity in the best shape possible with good home care habits for longevity of the dental implant.
Dr. Lee takes this all into factor before deciding if this is the right choice for the patient. The next step would be to get a CBCT scan (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) scan. This is a 3D view of the bone density, height width and shape. If the patient does not have adequate amount of bone to hold a implant in the upper a sinus lift must be done before placing an implant.
What is a sinus lift is a procedure done when there is not enough bone to hold an implant or the sinuses are to close. This happens when teeth are missing and bone resorbs over time. The area where bone is missing the dentist will do a bone graft and place bone to promote and support bone growth. This procedure can take up to several months to heal and following that another 5-9 months before a dental implant can be placed.
