At Seymour Dental we teach all about home care and gum care. Patient dental education is an important part of keeping a healthy oral cavity.

Here is a list of the different stages of gum disease.

Gum Care

Periodontal Disease

The earlier you treat periodontal disease, the easier it is to control, and the better chance you have of restoring the health of your mouth and saving your teeth.

In a healthy mouth, teeth fit snugly in their sockets, their roots surrounded by a strong foundation of gums and other supportive tissue.

Gum Care

Stages of the Disease

Gingivitis

If not removed regularly from teeth and gums, bacteria grow out of control and produce toxins that irritate your gums. Calculus along the gum line forms a rough surface on which plaque accumulates, causing more irritation and swelling. You may notice sore, bleeding gums or bad breath. Spaces between gum and tooth (pockets) may exist, but no bone is damaged in this mild, reversible form of periodontal disease.

Gingivits
.

Periodontitis

The most common cause of periodontitis plaque (and sometimes calculus) is found bellow the gum line. The ligaments break down and the gum detaches and pulls away from the teeth. The pockets deepen and fill with more bacteria. Supportive ligaments and bone start to show damage, resulting in loose teeth.

Peridontitis
.

Advanced Periodontitis

When periodontitis progresses to the advanced stage, pockets deepen and may fill with pus. There may be swelling around the root and bone loss increases, your teeth may lose so much support that they fall out or need to be removed to preserve the overall health of your mouth.

Advanced Peridontitis
.

Symptoms / Diagnosis

At home, you can be on the alert for the warning signs of periodontal disease. If you have any of the following symptoms, see your dentist at once:

  • Red swollen, or tender gums

  • Gums that bleed when you brush your teeth

  • Pus between the teeth and gums (noticeable when the gums are pressed)

  • Loose permanent teeth

  • A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite

  • A change in the fit of your partial dentures

  • Bad breath

Of course, the only way to confirm a diagnosis of periodontal disease is to have your mouth thoroughly examined. During an examination your gums are evaluated for bleeding, swelling, firmness, and abnormal contours by your dentist or periodontist. Your teeth are also checked for movement and sensitivity, as well as your bite (which could be a contributing factor to the condition) is also assessed.

Full mouth x-rays less than a year old are usually required to detect breakdown of bone surrounding your teeth. Periodontal probing below the gum line involves measuring and recording the depth of the pockets around each tooth, which you can't see or feel. Probing is the key technique your periodontist uses to find out how serious your disease is and to plan your treatment.

.

Periodontal probing

Peridontal Probing

A probe is like a tiny ruler. Your periodontist inserts this tool gently in the spare, or pocket, between your tooth and gum. The deeper the probe goes, the deeper the pocket, and the more severe the periodontal disease.

  • A personal plan for active oral hygiene maintenance
  • A personal schedule of regular appointments, to prevent gum disease

Cosmetic DentistryWe are inundated everyday with Hollywood's images of the perfect smile. There is a reason that Hollywood's elite are sporting their dazzling, pearly whites. Studies show that a radiant, confident smile empowers us socially and in business relationships. It is one our most important physical attributes. So why are so few of us are satisfied with our smile?

Not long ago radiant smiles were either nature's gift or affordable to only a select few. Those days are gone. With advances in dentistry anyone can have a beautiful smile with minimal investment. Have a look at some of our smile makeovers. For most of us, simple inexpensive changes will have a dramatic effect. Usually the principle complaint of individuals is the colour of their teeth. Discolouration can result from wine, coffee, food, nicotine, age, genetic predisposition, exposure to high levels of fluoride at an early age and other factors.

Whitening

Whitening is a quick, easy, painless and inexpensive solution that will transform your smile. Healthy teeth can often be whitened through home or in-office treatments but should be supervised by your dentist. In severe cases other options may be considered such as bonding, veneers and crowns.

Cosmetic Dentistry - Whitening
Before After

Bonding

In Bonding, tooth-coloured resin is applied on the affected teeth. This process successfully solves more than colour issues. Bonding can correct for worn, cracked, chipped or widely spaced teeth as well.

Cosmetic Dentistry - Bonding
Before After

Veneers

Veneers offer another solution. Veneers are like a "jacket" for your teeth. A thin, tooth-coloured, porcelain jacket is sculpted for the front of each affected tooth. This allows your dentist to change the colour and the shape of each tooth if required.

Cosmetic Dentistry - Veneers

Crowns

In cases where the tooth is weak, Crowns are often the desired solution. Crowns cover all sides of the tooth and provide structure. Today's crowns are tooth coloured and can not be distinguished from natural teeth. They can also correct for tooth misalignment. See more photos of crown and bridge work.

Cosmetic Dentistry - Crowns

Inlays

For many of us a hearty, head tilting laugh exposes a mouth full of metal fillings. We are conscious of previous dental work and limit or cover our smiles. Modern dental techniques now allow you to change all that through the use of Inlays. Inlays are toothcoloured fillings which can be matched to your specific tooth colour. Often, existing metal fillings can be easily replaced with these new ceramic versions at little expense. The choice is yours.

Teeth Whitening

.

Dr. Lee uses composite fillings (also called plastic or white fillings) to replace the tooth structure which has been lost to decay.

.

Crown & Bridge

Used to restore or replace missing teeth. Dr. Lee uses a conservative approach to prepare the teeth for a crown or bridge. Our goal is to preserve the healthy tooth structure whenever possible.

We then incorporate our progressive dental lab to produce a functional and cosmetically sound result.

.

Orthodontics

Dr. Lee has achieved a portfolio of orthodontic cases in which he has moved the patient's teeth to a functional position. This has helped improve the smiles of many children and adults.

Periodontic Treatment

Periodontal infection is long-term infection that affects gum and bone, and is the most common cause of tooth loss because it occurs painlessly. We use moderate surgical procedures and chemotherapeutic agents to treat and heal patients with these types of gum and bone conditions.

Dr. Lee uses certain moderate surgical procedures to treat patients with gum and bone conditions. He consults specialists when required.

.

North Vancouver Dentist childrens teeth cavities hygiene orthodontics http://www.seymourdentalatparkgatevillage.com/Blog.php/north-vancouver-dentist-childrens-teeth-cavities-hygiene-orthodontics Thu, 12 Oct 2017 10:52:28 -0700 Dr. Gilbert Lee General http://www.seymourdentalatparkgatevillage.com/Blog.php/north-vancouver-dentist-childrens-teeth-cavities-hygiene-orthodontics Your Children's Teeth

Just as your child's first word and first step are important developmental milestones, so, too, is the first tooth. But with that first tooth comes a responsibility for you to make your child's dental future as healthy as it can be.

Thumb-sucking usually isn't harmful until the permanent front teeth come in. If you're worried about your child's habit, ask your dentist.

Dental Milestones

First tooth

Your child's first primary (baby) tooth will probably be one of the lower two front teeth (central incisors) and will appear between the ages of 6 and 10 months. Be sure to clean them as soon as they appear. Simply wipe the teeth and gums with gauze or a damp washcloth.

A teething baby may drool, seem fussy, and wake up often at night. Fever, diarrhea, or a rash are not signs of teething; call your family doctor or pediatrician.

.

First visit to the dentist

The Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children see a dentist by age 3. "Problems can start at even an earlier age," says Dr. Franklin Pulver, immediate past president of the academy, "especially if the child is in the habit of taking bottle to bed, which can cause decay. "

.

First toothbrush

Your dentist will recommend when to begin using a toothbrush on your child's teeth. Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste for young children, and make sure they don't swallow it.

.

Complete set of primary teeth

Between the ages of 21 months and 3 years, your child will have 10 upper and 10 lower primary teeth.

.

First permanent tooth

The first permanent tooth is usually one of the six-year molars (teeth used for grinding), so named because they usually appear when children are 6 years old. Because no primary teeth are lost before the six-year molars erupt, you may not notice their appearance. Your dentist may recommend that sealants, plastic coatings that protect teeth against decay, be applied to the biting surfaces of these new teeth.

.

First orthodontic exam

The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic exam by the age of 7. If your child needs braces, your child's dentist may wait until most of the permanent teeth are in and jaw growth is complete.

.

Full set of permanent teeth

When the second molars come in around the age of 13, your child will have a full set of permanent teeth, except for the wisdom teeth.

.

Wisdom teeth

The wisdom teeth (the third molars located in the back of the mouth) usually erupt between the ages of 17 and 21. These teeth often become impacted - unable to erupt completely-and require extraction.

The image above is of a hemisectioned lower right molar tooth. Hemisection means to cut the tooth in half and save the healthy root of the tooth. This is done usually on a lower molar when a tooth has either fractured or has an infection on one of the roots. The infected root can be taken out and the healthy root of the tooth can be saved and the bone can either heal in by itself or have a bone agumentation done. When the area is healed the left over healthy root can be crowned and added to a bridge to fill in the gap.

Why wouldnt the dentist take out the full tooth and just leave half of the tooth?

Keeping half of the tooth will help preserve the bone and let the patient have the option of filing in the gap with a bridge.

Alot of times patients will just want teeth extracted when they feel there is pain or they hear the word infection they dont realize that options such as hemisections and root canals can be done.

When removing a tooth expecially a molar, you will be left with a gap, bone loss, eventually the teeth beside the extracted tooth will start to tip, over eruption of the opposing tooth etc. Dental implants are very expensive and not as good as your own teeth!

Know the different types of crowns! Book an appointment at Seymour Dental for a consultation with Dr.Lee on what crown may be best suited for you!

Teeth that have had large restorations or teeth that have had a root canal done are more at risk of fracturing or breaking off. Its important to protect the teeth that have alot of force on them like the back molars as well.

Book an appointment with us and come visit us at the Parkgate Plaza at #200-3650 Mount Seymour Parkway, North Vancouver, BC, V7H 2Y5 or give us a call at 604-924-8289.

Crown Types

There are several types of esthetic crowns. The type of crown you and your dentist choose will depend on a number of factors, including the location of the tooth or teeth being crowned, the type and severity of the discolouration, and the overall health of the surrounding gums.

A ceramo-metal crownCeramo-metal Crowns

Crowns - Ceramo-metal crown Advantages include:

Strongest type of esthetic crown, doesn't fracture or chip as easily as alternative esthetic type crown, and is usually the most economics.

Disadvantages include:

Metal may be visible if tissue shrinks or is thin, metal may affect the colour of the porcelain, and there is a possible bluish tint of gum if gum tissue is thin and metal shows through

Full gold crownFull Gold Crowns

Crowns - Full Gold Crown

Advantages include:

Kind to tissues and gums, strong, nothing chips or breaks off like with porcelain and composite crowns.

Disadvantages include:

Not as esthetic as other crowns.

Porcelain or compositePorcelain or Composite See before and After photos.

Crowns - Porcelaine or composite

Advantages include:

Most esthetic throughout crown life, and no metal shows.

Disadvantages include:

Not as strong as ceramometal crown, margin may be more susceptible to chipping, and more costly to make.

*Porcelain and composite crowns are esthetically similar except that they are made of different materials (composite crowns won't chip as easily as porcelain crowns and wear more evenly with your natural teeth).

All about Gum Care
